\u201cWhere are you going? I thought we could watch a movie tonight, Frank,\u201d Cheryl frowned at her husband as she saw him heading toward the front door after dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got a few things to do at the garage,\u201d he replied, wearing his shoes. \u201cI won\u2019t have time later, honey. I\u2019m paying good money to rent that space, and I gotta use it as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd when do we get to see your car finally?\u201d she asked, containing her anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen it\u2019s ready.\u201d He gave her a kiss and left the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl turned to their daughter. \u201cHave you ever seen Dad\u2019s car?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, Cheryl met up with her ex-lover at a posh bar. \u201cI can\u2019t believe you called me,\u201d he smiled at her as a waitress delivered their drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl flipped her locks in a flirty manner. \u201cWell, it\u2019s just been so long,\u201d she said. \u201cI had no idea what I wanted back then, but I now realize I made a mistake when I didn\u2019t pick you,\u201d she paused. \u201cAre you married to someone? \u201cSo you\u2019re getting separated?\u201d Adam asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, and I know it\u2019s been years, but do you think we could\u2014\u201d Cheryl started, but Adam said \u201cyes\u201d before she could finish. And Cheryl smiled seductively at Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A week after their bar encounter, Cheryl had suggested meeting at the rental right at dinnertime, knowing that Frank would appear shortly afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she had always suspected, there was no car inside, but there were drawers, boxes, a vanity table, a closet, and a shoe shelf\u2026 with high heels. She turned to Adam, extending her arms like a showgirl from a competition program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dThis is Frank\u2019s garage. He apparently comes here to work on his vintage car. Don\u2019t know where that is, but I\u2019ve had this fantasy about having a little tryst in here,\u201d Cheryl said, her smile seductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou remember how I was when you worked on your motorcycle,\u201d she recalled, getting closer to Adam. \u201dHow I would sneak up behind you and touch your back\u2026your shoulders\u2026\u201d She mimicked all her words, and her hands felt Adam\u2019s trembling body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was convinced almost immediately because his strong hands grabbed her body and pinned her to the garage wall in a scorching kiss. Adam liked power, roughness, passion, and urgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl needed things to take a while so Frank could get there in time. But soon enough, she heard a car outside, and even Adam noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt must be for another rental,\u201d she said, distracting him and pulling off his shirt to be \u201ccaught\u201d in a more compromising position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know where you keep your shoes,\u201d a voice said, and Cheryl\u2019s body froze. It was Annie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, God! No! Get in the closet! It\u2019s my daughter!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam entered the closet as best he could just when the garage door opened, and Annie\u2019s eyes widened in shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMom? What are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI came here coz I know your dad is hiding something!\u201d Cheryl blurted out. \u201cWhere\u2019s the car? And what are women\u2019s shoes and vanity doing in here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m\u2014I came here to pick up shoes for him,\u201d Anne sighed, rubbing her forehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo you knew? You knew he was cheating?\u201d Cheryl gasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annie shook her head. \u201cYou need to come with me, Mom. He\u2019s not cheating on you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An hour later, Cheryl and Annie were at a club. Annie had ordered Cheryl a few drinks, and they watched several shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dAnnie, I still don\u2019t understand why we\u2019re here,\u201d Cheryl nudged her daughter, but Annie pointed to the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dGod, Mom!\u201d Annie rolled her eyes. \u201dLook closer!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl looked at the woman again, and finally, it clicked. Beneath all that makeup, the dress, the high heels, the shoes, and the wig\u2026was her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dFrank?\u201d she asked, widening her eyes at Annie, who nodded knowingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dHow long has this been going on?\u201d Cheryl asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dWell, the show has only been happening for a few months, but I think it may have been a latent desire or a hidden talent,\u201d Annie answered carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl\u2019s mouth opened and closed several times through Frank\u2019s musical number. \u201cFrank\u2019s a drag queen?\u201d she gasped. \u201cOh god!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Annie nodded. \u201cI\u2019m sorry I didn\u2019t tell you, Mom. But I only discovered it by chance when I was here with my friends one night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl could see how the guests seemed to love Frank. He did a great job, and she clapped when his show was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we meet him?\u201d she asked Annie eventually, and they went backstage to see Frank, who was shocked. He began removing the wig nervously as if that would hide anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKeep the wig, Frank,\u201d Cheryl said, patting his shoulder. \u201cGod, you scared me. I thought you were cheating. But I\u2019m glad I know the truth now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As they drove home, Cheryl broke the silence. \u201cSo, did you wear my shoes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first,\u201d Frank answered. \u201cBut they didn\u2019t fit. Your feet are too small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoes this\u2014whatever you\u2019re doing\u2014so are you a woman now?\u201d she asked worriedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo! Jesus!\u201d Frank gasped. \u201cDrag queens are not transgender women, honey. That\u2019s their identity. I only dress as a woman and perform for entertainment. But I know I\u2019m a man and love you and Annie and our lives together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut how did you end up in that club?\u201d she asked as they arrived home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMoney has been tough since Annie started college,\u201d Frank said. \u201cInitially, I took the job of arranging the stage and handling equipment like a roadie. But then I was entranced by the shows, found myself singing along, and guess the other queens told the manager. He offered me the job, and I couldn\u2019t say no. Better pay and we don\u2019t have to worry for a while now since people seem to like me,\u201d he chuckled, opening her car door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI didn\u2019t know we were in trouble,\u201d Cheryl expressed, grabbing his arm to stop him on their porch. \u201cBesides, why didn\u2019t you tell me anything at all? I thought you were cheating and went crazy. Compared to that\u2026this is pretty great. I can accept this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never knew you\u2019d be so open to this, Cheryl. And hey, we\u2019re not in trouble. But I was just dying at my regular job. But now, I can enjoy it because I get to do something amazing at night, and I\u2019m earning more for our family. It gave me peace of mind, and it\u2019s like a whole new world opened up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat sounds exciting,\u201d Cheryl smiled. Annie arrived in her car right then, and for a while, they all just hugged and stood in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning, they were having breakfast when the doorbell rang. \u201cI\u2019ll get it,\u201d Cheryl walked to the door and stared through the peephole in shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t send me away again, Cheryl! You told me he was the wrong choice\u2026unless it was all a lie? Were you manipulating me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShush\u2026they\u2019ll hear you! Okay, let\u2019s meet later. Give me your address,\u201d she said and calmed down when Adam left. She lied to Frank and Annie that it was a neighbor and went to Adam\u2019s apartment later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGetting a divorce is hard and expensive. I\u2019ll pay for the lawyer,\u201d Adam began, not letting Cheryl get a word in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl backtracked. \u201cI love you, Adam. It\u2019s as if I can\u2019t live without you. But Frank is my daughter\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey, I was just worried\u2026 that you wouldn\u2019t pick me again if the divorce were too hard,\u201d he smiled and got closer to her. \u201cWe can get to know your daughter\u2026figure something out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dThat\u2019s a good idea, baby,\u201d Cheryl touched his face, keeping the charade. Then she suggested they could have wine together and excused herself to the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After opening his medicine cabinet, Cheryl immediately spotted a bottle of sleeping pills. Fortunately, the pills were the kind with powder encased in gelatin, so she opened as many as she could, dumping them into his wine and stirring it to dissolve it when he didn\u2019t notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They sat on his couch, drinking, and Cheryl sipped, observing him. They talked for a while until Adam\u2019s words started slurring, and his eyes spun. He fell from the couch, and foam slipped from his mouth, but Cheryl left him alone, deciding not to call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, Frank and Cheryl booked a trip to their favorite cabin getaway and were at the airport check-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dLet me help you with your carry-on,\u201d Frank said and grabbed her stuff with one hand, putting his other on her waist to guide her toward the security area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unexpected commotion stopped them as several police officers ran with airport security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
