The couple first crossed paths when Brigette was 41 and Mattia was 25. In the beginning, their relationship played out on VH1\u2019s reality show \u201cStrange Love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair\u2019s relationship flourished, and they tied the knot in a glamorous ceremony in Malta in 2006. Nielsen revealed that she experienced plenty of backlash when she married a younger man, but this didn\u2019t stop her from following her heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actress\u2019 life changed when she met the Italian model. Even when people said it was ridiculous for her to marry a younger man, the two didn\u2019t pay attention to their big age gap. \u201cIt just fits perfectly. We\u2019re a good team,\u201d Nielsen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-scoffs-at-those-who-laughed-when-she-married-younger-man-8404529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two have now been married for almost 20 years, and Nielsen noted that the people who were pointing fingers at them and laughing had since divorced. Nielsen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-scoffs-at-those-who-laughed-when-she-married-younger-man-8404529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>\u00a0her marriage has lasted because the two make it exciting and accept and respect each other:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You shouldn\u2019t ever try to change the person you fell in love with to \u2018make them better.\u2019 Allow them to be them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cCreed II\u201d star also doesn\u2019t sense the need to uphold a youthful appearance to match her husband\u2019s. Now in her 60s, she feels good but doesn\u2019t know what the 70s will bring. \u201cThat\u2019s when gravity really starts pulling everything down,\u201d she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-scoffs-at-those-who-laughed-when-she-married-younger-man-8404529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">added<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NIELSEN HIT BACK AT THESE COMMENTS WHEN SHE SAID THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS BEING TOO OLD TO BE A MOM.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite her concerns, she will take everything one day at a time, and if she feels awful about how she looks at some point in the future, then she will do something about it. For now, the actress is content with spending time with her happy little family. She and her husband share one kid, Frida, now 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BRIGITTE ON PARENTING AS AN OLDER MOTHER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nielsen spent 13 years trying to get\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-loves-being-a-mom-at-60-8404349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pregnant via IVF<\/a>. Her struggle ended when she and Dessi welcomed Frida on June 22, 2018. The actress said she had a long time to prepare for her daughter, seeing that it took years for IVF to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her doctor had cautioned her to be realistic about her slim chances of conceiving, citing only a two-and-a-half percent probability. When she eventually became pregnant, the experience was incredibly gratifying. Yet, Nielsen was worried because being pregnant at 54 was high risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cMercenaries\u201d actress soon discovered that she didn\u2019t have to worry as her pregnancy turned out to be the easiest out of all her other pregnancies. The fact that her priorities had shifted and she had a deep desire and choice to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-loves-being-a-mom-at-60-8404349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a mom again<\/a>\u00a0made all the difference. Nielsen felt so good that she would have remained pregnant for another year. When Frida finally arrived, everything was so easy and brilliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actress, who has been married five times, was already a mom to four adult sons when she welcomed Frida. According to her, her sons, Raoul Meyer Jr., 28, Douglas Meyer, 30, Killian Gastineau, 33, and Julian Winding, 39, said she was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-loves-being-a-mom-at-60-8404349#:~:text=Brigitte%20Nielsen%20knows,her%20earlier%20kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">far too old<\/a>\u00a0to be a mom to Frida. Many others also criticized her for having a child in her mid-50s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nielsen hit back at these comments when she said that there was no such thing as being too old to be a mom. She pointed out that people don\u2019t throw these comments at men when they have children in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. \u201cLook at Robert De Niro. He\u2019s 79, and he has a 7-month-old,\u201d the actress&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-loves-being-a-mom-at-60-8404349#:~:text=Brigitte%20Nielsen%20knows,her%20earlier%20kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elaborated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 60-year-old now argues that her wisdom and age have made her a great parent. She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/brigitte-nielsen-loves-being-a-mom-at-60-8404349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>\u00a0that people say grandmothers are the best at parenting, and she feels like she has this mindset and emotion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have the patience and that extra bit of love to give now, and I think it\u2019s because I\u2019m a grandmother\u2019s age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a young mother, Nielsen had to juggle parenting with being single, traveling by plane, and being on movie sets. But now, her daughter comes first. As much as she is older now, she is surprised that she feels less tired raising Frida than she was with her boys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nielsen understands that people are a bit too skeptical about women having kids in their older years. She also advises women to be realistic and preserve their eggs at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/parents\/brigitte-nielsen-daughter-frida-born-via-ivf-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a reasonable age<\/a>\u00a0if they also want to have kids late. The actress froze her own eggs at age 40 and noted that she wouldn\u2019t even bother trying at age 42.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her important message to all women was that if motherhood is something they really want, they should never give up. However, they must be ready to encounter the disappointment of IVF if they choose that path, embrace the waiting, and know that this journey is very expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mom of five also totally respects that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/parents\/brigitte-nielsen-daughter-frida-born-via-ivf-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her journey<\/a>\u00a0isn\u2019t for everyone, so not all will like it or agree with it. However, she emphasized that it is her life and one that she is happy with.
