Fox News Channel concluded 2023 as the most-watched cable network for the eighth consecutive year. Suzanne Scott, FOX News Media CEO, praised the network’s team for their exceptional performance during an unprecedented news cycle.
“The Five,” featuring Greg Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, Dana Perino, Jeanine Pirro, and rotating co-hosts Jessica Tarlov and Harold Ford Jr., was the top cable news program for the second year in a row, averaging 2.9 million viewers.
“Jesse Watters Primetime” and “Hannity” followed, with 2.5 million and 2.4 million viewers, respectively.
Fox News dominated the rankings with 13 of the top 20 most-watched cable news programs.
CNN’s top show, “Anderson Cooper 360,” was the network’s most-watched program but finished second overall among cable news options, with only 737,000 total viewers. This placed it behind 14 Fox News programs and 14 MSNBC shows. CNN’s in-house media reporter has questioned whether the network’s “lackluster” ratings can be improved.
In the key demographic of adults aged 25-54, Fox News’s “The Five” led with an average of 301,000 viewers, marking the first time a non-primetime cable program topped this category. Other Fox News programs, including “Hannity,” “Gutfeld!,” “Jesse Watters Primetime,” and “The Ingraham Angle,” also outperformed CNN and MSNBC in this demographic.
CNN experienced its lowest-rated year on record, following a previous year of historic lows. MSNBC also saw its least-watched year in the key demo during primetime since 1999.
Fox News Channel averaged 1.2 million total day viewers in 2023, easily surpassing the one-million viewer benchmark, with MSNBC in second place at 776,000 and CNN lagging behind with 479,000. In primetime, Fox News led with 1.9 million viewers, while ESPN came in second. MSNBC averaged 1.2 million primetime viewers for third place, but CNN struggled, averaging only 582,000, placing it 12th among cable networks and behind channels like TLC, Hallmark, and HGTV. Preliminary ratings last month were confirmed by final Nielsen Media Research data, which solidified Fox News Channel’s dominance.
