1-Year Building A Cozy Log Cabin In The Woods!

Log cabins have been around for hundreds of years, and are as popular today as they’ve ever been. Today there are more log cabin options than ever before with custom log homes, log cabin kits, in every size, style, and design you could imagine. If log homeownership is something you are considering you will have to determine whether you are going to get a log home kit, hire someone to build your log home, or build your log cabin yourself. It starts with the cutting down of dead pine trees that are on the builder’s 40-acre property to build a log cabin sugar shack that will house a maple sap boiler so they can enjoy some delicious maple syrup in the spring. With the help of a chainsaw, the overgrown and shaded-out dead pines are cut down providing the logs to build a sugar shack. The pines in this replanted forest are far too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have been cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. However, removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, the builder will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.

We will mostly be cutting trees and then getting the site chosen. It’s a lot of tree felling and hauling to get our raw materials. With the help of my chainsaw, I’ll cut down all the overgrown and shaded-out dead pines which I will cut into logs to build a sugar shack. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have been cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.

Next in the video, the builder starts building the log cabin from the foundation up. The butt-and-pass method is used which laps one row of logs over the other while fastening the logs together with spikes. This method is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching. A butt-and-pass corner joint on a log cabin creates the look of a rustic, old-fashioned cabin building. As the logs are laid to create the outside corners of the cabin building, the first log on each layer extends past the corner, and the log forms the other wall butts into the first. As the timbers are laid to build up the corner, the extended logs alternate for an effect that resembles interlaced fingers. The next step is to erect the log cabin walls from the foundation up.
